Best for medals, formal competitions and groups that want every stroke across the full card to count.
The format in plain English
Regular stroke play adds every stroke and penalty across the round. The lowest gross total wins a scratch event; in a handicap event the lowest net total wins.
Handicap handling
Course Handicap is converted to a Playing Handicap using the allowance in the Terms of the Competition. Current WHS guidance recommends 95% for medium-sized individual net fields and allows committees to consider 100% for fields under 30.
Net scoring subtracts the Playing Handicap from the gross total. Hole-by-hole stroke allocation may still be shown for live context, but the signed scorecard records gross scores.
Holing out matters
In regular stroke play, a player must hole out at every hole. A pickup means there is no valid regular stroke-play score unless the competition is explicitly using Maximum Score or another permitted variation.
Worked example
Gross to net
A player completes 18 holes in 91 strokes with a Playing Handicap of 15.
- Gross total: 91.
- Playing Handicap: 15.
- Net total: 91 minus 15.
The player's net score is 76; the lowest valid total wins.
Common pitfalls
- Writing net scores in place of the required gross hole scores.
- Picking up in regular stroke play and expecting the round to remain a valid complete-card score.
- Using Course Handicap without applying the competition's Playing Handicap allowance.
How Yardages handles it
- Yardages totals gross and net strokes and shows both against par.
- Competitive strokeplay disables pickups; friendly rounds can record one with a capped display value.
- The live standings rank the lowest net total first.
