How Stableford points, handicap strokes, pickups and round totals work.
Who it suits
Choose stableford when this sounds like your group.
Best for mixed-handicap groups, society days and any round where one bad hole should not end the competition.
The format in plain English
Stableford is stroke play scored as points on each hole. Your net score is compared with the target score, normally par, and the player with the most points wins.
A net par is worth 2 points, net bogey 1, net birdie 3 and net eagle 4. Net double bogey or worse earns zero, so you can pick up once no point is possible and keep the round moving.
Handicap handling
In a handicap round, strokes are applied hole by hole using the Playing Handicap and the scorecard's stroke-index order. Competition allowances are set by the Terms of the Competition; current WHS guidance commonly uses 95% for medium-sized individual fields and may use 100% for fields under 30.
For a social round, agree the allowance before teeing off. Yardages allocates the configured strokes to the relevant holes and turns each entered gross score into points.
What decides the winner
Add the points from every completed hole. The highest total wins; 36 points is the familiar benchmark when a player receives one point-making opportunity per hole and plays to handicap.
Worked example
A three-hole example
A player receives one stroke on holes 1 and 3, but none on hole 2.
- Hole 1, par 4: gross 5 becomes net 4, so the player earns 2 points.
- Hole 2, par 3: gross 4 stays net 4, so the player earns 1 point.
- Hole 3, par 5: gross 5 becomes net 4, so the player earns 3 points.
The player has 6 points from three holes.
Common pitfalls
- Using Handicap Index directly instead of the Course Handicap and competition Playing Handicap.
- Continuing a hole after no point is possible and slowing the group behind.
- Assuming every competition uses the same handicap allowance instead of checking its terms.
