Best for team days, charity events and mixed-ability groups that want everyone contributing to one ball.
The format in plain English
Every team member tees off, the team selects one shot, and everyone plays again from that spot. The process repeats until one ball is holed, producing one team score for the hole.
Team and handicap handling
Scramble has many local variations. The Terms of the Competition should state team size, placement procedure, minimum drives and the handicap allowance. England Golf publishes mandatory allowances for organised formats; do not invent one after the round begins.
Yardages currently treats its scramble leaderboard as gross team scoring. Teams are assigned during setup and no individual handicap or shot-detail tracking is applied.
What decides the winner
Add the selected-ball team score from each hole. The team with the lowest gross total, or lowest adjusted total where the competition terms apply a handicap, wins.
Worked example
One scramble hole
A four-player team plays a par 4.
- All four tee off and choose Mia's drive.
- All four play from the agreed spot near Mia's ball and choose Raj's approach.
- All four putt from Raj's spot; Jo holes the second putt.
The team records 4, regardless of which players supplied the selected shots.
Common pitfalls
- Failing to publish placement, minimum-drive and handicap rules before play.
- Continuing an unselected ball rather than every player replaying from the chosen spot.
- Expecting Yardages' current gross leaderboard to apply a competition scramble allowance.
How Yardages handles it
- Yardages supports two named teams with an even total of four to ten players.
- One team score is recorded per hole and ranked by gross strokes against par.
- Individual shot details and handicaps are disabled in the current scramble flow.
